A Song for Nezahualtcoytl
by GENNY LIM
The riches of this world are only lent to us
the things that are so good to enjoy we do not own
– Nahuatl
Nothing is ours to keep
The falling rain, the glowing sun
Nothing is forever
The sands of Sahara, the infinite sky
The blushing rose of innocence
The chaotic world spinning into darkness
Nothing is ours to keep
A river overflows its banks
Erodes soil, uproots trees, pushes down homes
In the blink of an eye, everything we possess is lost
In the space of a moment, the one we hold most dear is gone
Nothing is ours to keep
Even one star shining so bright in heaven
Even a smile that fills the room and
Lifts sorrow from every corner
Even a voice which speaks truth
When all words become lies
Nothing is ours to keep
The falling rain, the glowing sun
Nothing is ours to keep
Except the tender memory of a good heart
