Morpheus: (Sleep) Dream

by THE LAST HOISAN POETS

inspired by Kehinde Wiley, Morpheus (Ndeye Fatou Mbaye), 2022

Hooey foon, Nelaw, Faht moong, Gént

Sleep, sleep, my child, your momma has things to do

Lullaby, lullaby, darling, let the sea of stars cradle you

Dream, dream, my child, till the flowering dawn awakens you

My love, like the sky, watches over you

My love is the moon that shines on you

Hooey foon, Nelaw, Faht moong, Gént

Awake, awake, my sweet child, open your eyes to your heart within

Wispy dreams I mould for you

Blink, blink, my sweet, tickle what embraces you

My love, take this glistening star to shine on you

Diaphanous dreams I knead for you

Hooey foon, Nelaw, Faht moong, Gént

Rise, rise, mon petit chou, grass and flowers awaken you

Breathe, breathe the lilting air

Romp fields and forests radiant and bright

Explore the universe of earth’s treasures

Dream to rhythms of protea becoming and being you

Hooey foon, Nelaw, Faht moong, Gént

My love is the moon that shines on you.
