The Last Hoisan Poets celebrate AAWAA with a special poetry performance in the BAC galleries for the 35th Anniversary exhibition’s opening.
In the Presence Of: Collective Histories of the Asian American Women Artists Association, curated by Christina Hiromi Hobbs, will be on exhibition from January 27 through April 20, 2023 at the Berkeley Art Center.

“THE JINGWEI BIRD” explores the complexity of climate change and our relationship to the planet through multi-disciplinary performances with Del Sol Quartet and The Last Hoisan Poets. The project is centered around three pop-up poetry and music performances— two outdoor shows in San Francisco and Alameda county, and one special program for the seniors served by the NEMS PACE Center in San Francisco’s Chinatown.
“THE JINGWEI BIRD” weaves brand-new music by Asian-American composers with powerful bilingual poetry, using storytelling and mythology to deepen our understanding and awareness of the nature around us.

Future Histories Lab “A Year on Angel Island”: The Last Hoisan Poets” @ UC Berkeley
Tuesday, February 21, 2023, Poetry & Music Performance 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm, Tilden Room, MLK Student Union, UC Berkeley
The Last Hoisan Poets will read the moving poems that were carved into the walls of the detention barracks by immigrants incarcerated at the Angel Island Immigration Station. The poems will be read in the Hoisan-wa dialect of the immigrants, as well as in translation. Some of these poems were also featured as lyrics in the Angel Island Oratorio by Huang Ruo.

The Last Hoisan Poets – Genny Lim, Flo Oy Wong and Nellie Wong – return to the de Young Museum with “AMERICAN PEOPLE,” a poetic call & response, celebrating the life and art of the incomparable Faith Ringgold. Inspired by Ringgold’s iconic body of work, the poets speak to their own lived experiences as women, artists, and contemporaries of Ringgold. The program includes performances by special guests Destiny Muhammad (singer/songwriter/harpist), Tshaka Campbell (Poet Laureate of Santa Clara County), and Tongo Eisen-Martin (Poet Laureate of San Francisco).

American Born / Resident Alien is a poetry performance by the Last Hoisan Poets — Nellie Wong, Flo Oy Wong, and Genny Lim — exploring themes of migration, sisterhood, and spiritual transcendence. Held in conversation with Hung Liu: Golden Gate (金門), this program is inspired by personal and ancestral connections with Hung Liu’s life and art. The performance also features music by violinist Charlton Lee and cellist Kathryn Bates of the Del Sol String Quartet.
